Mesuring Gender Based Violence in Higher Education
Research projects
Published

June 1, 2024

SAFEDUC puts research at the service of the fight against sexist and sexual violence in higher education and research by producing knowledge. It aims at measuring the extent and diversity of these phenomena within the student population. For the past ten years or so, Gender based violence has been the subject of particular attention in the public debate. Their visibility is largely due to the success of testimonial campaigns widely circulated online, such as #MeToo and #BalanceTonPorc. In parallel to these campaigns, student and scientific initiatives have multiplied to raise the profile of this violence in higher education. In particular, these initiatives have shown that such violence mainly affects female students and gender minorities, that it degrades their learning and social conditions, and that, by extension, it is likely to harm their professional careers.

SAFEDUC is a research project led by Sciences Po’s Gender Studies Program in the frame of the partnership between Université Paris Cité and Sciences Po. It is funded by a grant awarded under the Initiative d’Excellence Université Paris 2019 (IdEx UP19). The aim is to develop a reproducible survey protocol to measure Gender based violence, taking into account the multiplicity of forms that this violence takes, as well as the contexts in which it emerges. This project will provide a more detailed understanding of the context in which violence occurs at the level of each university and campus. The survey updates existing research.

The team designed a survey questionnaire tailored to the student population. From March 25 to May 19, 2024, all Université Paris Cité and Sciences Po students, including PhD students, were able to respond anonymously to this online questionnaire. The results are currently being processed by the team. The project has been closely monitored by the DPOs of both partner institutions, as well as by their legal departments. It has received a favorable statement from Inserm’s ethics committee.
